Timtrace

Tracing timber origin

Sampling tutorials

We need georeferenced samples to develop the chemical and genetic methods verifying the origin of tropical timber. This includes bark, wood and soil samples from different areas.

The tutorials below explain in detail how we collect and store the samples. To watch all five in a row, check out the full playlist on Youtube. Please get in touch if you are able to sample for us!

1 – Timtrace sampling introduction

2 – Bark samples

3 – Wood samples with an increment corer

for light and medium density wood

We use a Haglofs increment corer to sample the Southeast Asian Meranti (Shorea spp.).

4 – Wood samples with a drill

for high density wood

We use a drill to sample the African Azobe (Lophira alata) and Tali (Erythrophleum spp.).

5 – Soil samples
